I have the same question,with a 6 digit serial. The only difference is the addition of this batch indicator. The new Custom also shipped with a different case from the Standard, using a black and gold case instead of the brown and pink case that was the top-of-the-line case for the Les Paul Standard models. The headstock angle was changed from 17 degrees to 14, a wider headstock and a maple top in lieu of the original 1953-1961 mahogany top construction. Anything else would be assuming. The production numbers run in a consecutive order and, aside from a few oddities in the change over years 1961-1962 , it is fairly accurate to use them when identifying solid body instruments produced between 1953 and 1961. I have a 359 and that's what you have there - split diamond headstock inlay and block markers. The most general physical piece of evidence on the instrument, however, is going to be the logo on the headstock. Determining exactly when your Gibson specimen was made can have high stakes attached to it. I don't think the cause is worry about counterfeits. Some time in 1953, instruments were ink stamped on the headstock back with 5 or 6 digit numbers, the first indicating the year, the following numbers are production numbers.
